I don't have a black-and-white answer, but there are mostly two types of stocks I track. One is the hottest or most popular stocks in the market—the stocks leading the market, making a significant move, or representing the leading sector. Sometimes I put a sector ETF, such as the semiconductor ETF, in the tracking section. I wanted to watch MU and SNDK to see whether they became extremely extended and how they pulled back: whether they suffered a huge waterfall flush or simply chopped around. Their action tells me how strong or weak the market is. I also track some names mainly on the weekly chart. They may be bullish weekly even when the daily chart is not ready.
