Risk & Sizing

How should a trader who struggles to take meaningful risk think about risk and leverage?

5 May 2026 · Edited from Martin’s stream; not a verbatim quotation.

First, identify what “a lot of risk” means. Is 5% of the account a lot, or does the dollar amount feel large? Treating trades as percentages of your account is usually the best approach; forget the dollar amount. Do not put too much emphasis on leverage either. Manage each trade individually. I may be more than 200% long, but I did not buy everything at once. I had several trades working on Thursday, added two or three on Friday, and two more on Monday. Gradually build profit cushions and control drawdown as you add positions.
